XCEL Program
Invitation.
Inclusion in our XCEL Team Program is by invitation only. We, typically, invite athletes in our recreational classes (Advanced Beginner and Intermediate) who want more gym time. We are always on the lookout for athletes who show the desire to get better in our recreational classes!
Commitment.
The XCEL Team Program provides more flexibility in commitment. At most, an athlete in the XCEL Team Program will practice three days a week. This reflects the flexibility of an active athlete. We have many athletes who compete and participate in many other sports and extracurricular activities.
Strength
Physical strength comes in many facets throughout the gym. A large emphasis is put on conditioning as preparation for skill development. While conditioning focuses on the physical aspect, our philosophy highlights the importance of mental strength. The J.O. Program offers many opportunities for athletes to compete, earn positive reinforcement, and leave stronger individuals than when they came!
Respect
We operate our program much like a classroom environment. Athletes must learn to respect not only the coaching staff but their peers as well! With respect comes a healthy level of competition and the ability to push each other
Accountability
Athletes, no matter the age, learn that their progress is dictated by the effort put into practice. We cannot guarantee individual or team success; however, we can guarantee an environment that pushes athletes to work hard for everything they earn. Much like life, one does not wake up with accomplishments! Hard work and learning to compete allow for individual and team successes.

FAQs
Is there a written commitment?
Yes, every year (May/June timeframe) we send out team contracts. The contract represents a 12 month commitment. While the contract seems very formal, we do not enforce it to the letter. We ask that you make the best decision for your family at the time!
Will my athlete have the opportunity to compete at meets?
Yes, levels 3-10 compete. A typical meet season spans from November/December - May with roughly 1 meet a month. In the past, we have competed in Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, and Florida. Lower levels will stick closer to Virginia while upper levels have more opportunity to travel.
We want to join the team but will be out from May - August. What is your policy?
The summer months represent the most skill, strength, and flexibility development. Missing these crucial months has the potential to set your athlete behind. The possibility to join in the fall exists; however, we cannot hold a spot for the entire summer.
What does level progression look like on team?
Athletes will be evaluated at the end of every year (May/June). After evaluations, athletes will be assigned to new levels and groups based on their progression. We use a blend of performance in practice, performance at meets, and skills needed for the following year.
Do we get to choose which meets we go to?
When committing to team, you and your athlete commit to both the practice and meet schedule set by River City. It is our expectation that you attend every meet on the schedule.
My child has tried team and did not like it. Can we return to classes?
Absolutely! We want athletes to grow and improve in an environment that is best suited for them. We have had athletes leave the team and rejoin classes!
